The Academic Personnel Certificate Program is designed to provide a comprehensive working knowledge of all aspects of Academic Personnel. Academic polices and procedures will be covered in general terms in the introductory course. These concepts will be further built on in the courses focused on specific groups of academic employees. Participants are welcome to take individual courses or to work towards a certificate.
To earn a certificate, completion of all Certificate Program Courses are required. All coursework must be completed within a two-year period. Individuals who have previously attended the Research Appointments or PPS Data class do not need to repeat the class, but must contact to verify the prior attendance. Introduction to Academic Personnel is a prerequisite for all other courses for individuals working towards the certificate.

Additional Compensation is any compensation paid to an academic appointee by the University in excess of their full-time salary. The policies concerning payment of additional compensation vary greatly depending on the type of payment. This course will cover policies, procedures and "how-to" for a wide range of types of additional compensation. This course is intended for those unfamiliar with additional compensation or those pursuing the certificate. A separate Additional Compensation Updates workshop will be held for those who are familiar with the subject.
This course will provide an overview of all academic titles, processes and policies. Ladder faculty as well as temporary teaching and research titles will be discussed. Other topics will include academic terminology, appropriate use of the various academic titles, salary administration and the review process. This class is a prerequisite for all other courses for individuals who wish to obtain a certificate.
An important part of the graduate student experience is training in both research and teaching. This course will cover student academic employment in titles including Graduate Student Researcher, Teaching Assistant, Associate and Reader. Lecturers, Adjunct Professors, Visiting Professors- all of these titles and more will be covered in this course on temporary teaching appointments. Learn how to determine which title is the appropriate one to use, how to request an appointment, and what other considerations should be made when bringing someone to campus to teach on a temporary basis. Benefits, the Memorandum of Understanding for covered titles, and the review process will also be discussed
What can be done to make the recruitment process go smoothly and quickly and assist in the successful hire of new faculty? Once a new faculty member is hired, what needs to be done to assist with their successful advancement up the ladder, and what is the role of the departmental staff in this process? This course will cover all aspects of the appointment and advancement processes for ladder faculty. Topics include; affirmative action requirements, the search process, start-up requests, advancement eligibility, types of merits and promotions, and preparation of appointment and advancement cases.
Individuals involved in research activity at the University may be employed in a variety of academic titles. Professional Research, Project Scientist, Specialist, and Postdoctoral Scholar titles will be covered in this course. Learn how to determine which title is the appropriate one to use as well as how to request an appointment, reappointment or advancement in these series.
